Don’t let labels fool you. Soft water is water without calcium. Other products may claim they have softening capabilities but without the ion exchange with salt or potassium, it is not soft water and will leave white spots on sinks, fixtures and shower doors along with cloudy glasses and dishes.

Are health issues preventing you from getting a softener? Did you know that softeners don’t have to use salt? Most softeners have the capability of using either salt or potassium. Softeners today are more efficient than the “olden days” and leave little salt or potassium in the water after softening.
For those who would prefer separate filtration and softening systems, we can pair up a carbon filter with a water softener. The filter will remove contaminates. The filtered water then would move on to the softener to remove the calcium, magnesium, and iron through the ion exchange. It would then enter the house as actual soft water!
Water Filtration
If you have lived in Tucson for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed we don’t have the best water in the world. As with most treated water, getting rid of the bad stuff means leaving behind some things we don’t want, such as chlorine and chloramines. These chemicals are introduced at the treatment plant to kill harmful bacteria. By the time the water reaches your home the chemicals have done their job and there’s no need for the chlorine in the water.

Filtration of your water is a process that removes particles from the water. This usually occurs with filters, like a Britta or a fridge filter, but our systems do it for your entire home!
Would you like more protection to your plumbing system while keeping contaminates out of your water? By adding a filter at your water inlet to your house, it can protect your plumbing fixtures from corrosives (i.e. Chlorine), reduce dry skin and hair and remove contaminates so you don’t absorb them into your sink while bathing.
Our 4×10 or 4×20 carbon filters act like a large refrigerator filter removing chemicals and odors from your water to create high quality water at every faucet. While cleaning the water the carbon filter will also extend the life of your plumbing system, faucets and even your softener and other water appliances. These filters only need to be changed annually compared to your refrigerators 2-3 times a year and are easily obtained on the internet or local hardware store.
How it Works
Reverse Osmosis, contain multiple filters within one system. R.O. filters remove more minerals and smaller solids and will remove common chemical contaminants like metal ions and aqueous salts. It will go even deeper to filter sodium, chloride, copper, chromium, and lead, and may reduce arsenic, fluoride, radium, sulfate, calcium, magnesium, potassium, nitrate, and phosphorous. Reverse osmosis membrane filters frequently are used to reduce the levels of total dissolved solids and suspended particles within water.
Water Conditioning
Water conditioning is not removing anything from the water, not adding or treating the water. Water conditioning is a process that “changes” the water. It is a process that changes the make-up of the calcium to make it like Teflon so the mineral does NOT adhere to surfaces like faucets and showers. If you were to test conditioned water, it would still contain calcium, magnesium, iron, and chemical contaminants. While conditioned water is not filtered water, it does descale existing calcium from the internal water pipes as it goes through your plumbing system.
At Tucson Plumbing, our systems include both a filtration canister, or tank, and a conditioning canister. One canister will remove the contaminants and then the other will condition the water without the salt. Green Nac and the Nuvo are solid choices for this dual purpose filtration/conditioner solution.
Nuvo H2O: Instead of removing beneficial minerals like traditional salt softeners, the NuvoH2O system binds and isolates the hard mineral ions with a process known as chelation. Once bound to CitraCharge®, NuvoH2O’s binding agent, the mineral cannot form scale. NuvoH2O also lowers the measured pH of the water to reduce or eliminate scale formation. Reduced pH makes citrate ions more effective in binding minerals, so they can’t form water scale without electricity, extra water to maintain a resin bed like a traditional water softener.
Green Nac: Much like the Nuvo, the Green Nac does not remove calcium from the water but transforms dissolved hardness into harmless microscopic crystal particles using Nucleation Assisted Crystallization (NAC). The crystals move through the plumbing system without latching onto pipes and fixtures. More importantly the crystals are formed without the use of salt, a drain or electricity. The Green Nac is made up in a two part system. The first is a large coconut shell carbon tank that filters/removes or reduces chlorine, herbicides, pesticides, cleaning by-products, and tri halo methane while also removing unpleasant tastes and odors from your water. It’s like have water bottle quality water at every tap in the house! The second part is the NAC system that conditions your water to prevent scaling remove/reduce any existing scale build up in your pipes! This system is essentially maintenance free for up to 5 years!

Where Do These Systems Get Installed?
Where Do These Systems Get Installed?
In a best-case scenario, all of these systems would be installed on a soft water or filtration loop. This loop would be installed during construction to isolate your interior plumbing from your exterior plumbing. Not all outdoor plants and animals appreciate filtered or softened water. Soft water is not good for plants when softened with salt.
The loop is usually located on the back wall of the garage. It would include a drain line and an electrical outlet to power your appliance.
If a loop is not available, we will try to install your chosen appliance as close as we can to the main water inlet to the house. Sometimes this is inside the garage, or the installation would be done outside in the right set of circumstances. Our experienced technicians can advise you on the best installation suitable for your property.
